Uneven floor

Hi, we live in a flat built in 1850 and the floor in the hallway is really uneven. I think it's a supporting beam that rises in the middle of the hall and falls on either side. Because of this we were thinking that carpet would be the best medium to hide it. Before we lay the carpet, though, any ideas on how to correct the level? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
