Suitability of porcelain tiles for underfloor heating?

Posted by Steve Blandford, on
We have been told that porcelain floor tiles take too long to heat up via an underfloor heating mat. Also that B and Q won't lay this kind of mat because it is vulnerable to damage when the tiles are laid. Advice would be very welcome.

They might take slightly longer to warm up than ceramic tiles, but that also means that they take longer to cool down, so once they are warm they stay warm for longer. To save damage of the mat while tiling, pour over 1 or 2 coats of self leveling floor compound over the matting first. This holds it all in place and allows the tiling to be laid as normal. Test the matting before it's put down, as it goes down and after the self leveler has gone down.
