How do I cover damaged floor before laying vinyl?

Posted by Jo Shew, on
I am replacing an ensuite carpet with vinyl tiles. There had been a leak in the past from the shower cubicle that had soaked through to the hardboard floor underneath causing it become crumbly in a small area. Should I cover the floor with a thin sheet of plywood before laying the vinyl? I did not want anything thick to avoid raising the floor level above that of the adjoining room. Do I need to lay a waterproof membrane at all?

Hi jo if I were you I would take the hardboard up and make sure the floorboards or chipboard subfloor is dry and then put down 6mm plywood as a base so you have a nice smooth subfloor to fix the vinyl tiles to.hope this helps. Alan
