Sound proof flooring

Posted by Peter Lu, on
I am doing a loft conversion soon, need to reduce sound as much as possible between the 1st floor and the loft. What is the best way to do this? I have seen acoustic insulation, chipboard with acoustic layer from Selco. Please advise how to install these.

Hi Peter on most loft conversions the new floor is independent to the existing ceiling to help with sound transfer and avoid cracks in the existing ceilings. Insulating the existing ceiling and between the new floor joists should be enough, the acoustic chipboard will help with sound deadening as it just sits on the joists rather than being fixed down but is generally used where you have got multiple occupants in the building and noise would be more of an issue. Carpeting the new floor would also help with sound transfer. Follow manufacturers instructions when installing insulation/flooring. Please note if you are doing the job yourself you cannot form a floor on the existing ceiling joists, they are not strong enough you will have to install rsj's. Hope this helps. Ed

Hi Peter I would strongly suggest you refer to the planning officer and surveyor for advice. I assume you have planning permission and plans which would have been passed. if in doubt refer to the building inspector
