Bathroom floor

Posted by Charlotte Cleaver, on
Hi All, I am replacing the flooring in my bathroom, well reinstating the floorboards after the previous owner removed them and replaced with chipboard. I would like to sand and varnish the new floorboards and have a bare wood floor but will this be watertight enough for me not to get leaks in the room below or should I put a aqua concrete board under the new floorboards? If I do need to put a aqua board it will make a step into the bathroom is there a way for that not to happen, can you shave the joists?

Hi Charlotte you definitely can't reduce the floor joists as you would weaken them! How much water are you expecting to be splashing about? Under normally conditions there should be minimal water going on to the boards so I don't think you would need to do anything, if you are getting large amounts of water then you need a waterproof floor covering to protect the floorboards.
