Hardwood floorboards or olden style subfloor planks

Hello I have recently ripped up my carpet and found planks which look like floorboards. Then a friend said because it's a 1950's house IT might be the olden style subflooring planks. The planks run vertically in the room and there are gaps but not huge. In the gaps it just looks black like insulation. Just wondering how I can tell
