Putting vinyl down on wooden floorboards

Posted by Angela Linton, on
I have a dining room appox 4 x 4 m which i would like to cover with vinyl. At the moment it has old floorbords which are uneven in some places, though they have been sanded and the gaps filled in with woodfiller. I was wondering if there was anyway of getting round this such as putting down foam/underlay and how much extra it would add to the cost of fitting the flooring.

Hi Angela re my earlier answer, plywood is far more stable than hardboard so you won't have to worry about it buckling especially if the area is prone to any moisture. Do it once and do it right, the cheap option is seldom ever the best! Ed

Hi Angela the best way would be to over board the floorboards with plywood sheets to give a more even surface. You would need about 7 sheets plus fixings so between £250-£300 approximately depending on shape of room. Ed

I think if your going to lay a vinyl floor you could overlay the floor boards with hardboard sheets this would be much cheaper than plywood sheets Regards peter howell

Depending on how bad your existing floorboards are depends on which thickness of plywood to install. In my experience, at least 6mm or 9mm thick plywood normally does the job. Ignore the hardboard as it's only 3mm thick and would just follow the contours of your existing uneven floorboards. Never put anything soft or pliable under vinyl flooring as there's a good chance you will puncture or tear it when walking on it. Any flooring is only as good as the prep work that is underneath it!
