Hi Mike, There are plenty of alternatives. My suggestions would be either to replace the area with a nice decorative gravel or AstroTurf.
Alternatives to front lawn

We have a small front lawn that is mostly in the shade, so the grass isn't particularly great. We were wondering what alternatives there might be as it seems a waste of time mowing it. The lawn is on a slight incline so unsure if shingles/bark would slip down the slope over time.
