Paying upfront

Is it usual to pay 50% of the cost of the job upfront for materials if you have found the tradesperson on facebook and don't have a recommendation from a friend?

No I wouldn’t do that to be honest Without recommendations it’s a risk You can use staged payments ie You buy the materials once agreed progress is made then pay that way to protect yourself
