When my central heating is on i get a big bang from the boiler that shuts off the pilot light. is it the heat exchanger or do ineed a powerflush or new boiler?

Your boiler has explosive ignition I would refrain from using the boiler until a gas safe engineer has looked at it. Again I urdge you to turn off the boiler and post a job ASAP

Dear Rob . First before replacing a boiler ;) please check by opening drain valve ( if there is any fitted) or by bleeding valve what color of water is discharge from heatin system . If will be black your system will required power flushing( this will clean heat exchanger too ) if water will be clear it would mean that is a faulty heat exchanger or if your boiler have not been serviced for a long time just will required a service. I hope this can help. Regards Rafal

I forgot to mention that you need gas engineer as soon as possible as explosive ignition can be very danger so please turn boiler off and wait fir a gas engineer
