Can I replace a fireplace mantelpiece and back and keep the gas fire?

Posted by Sally Palmer, on
I have a 1980s house with a flat wall and an external chimney stack. It currently has a marble suite with a gas fire installed in the living room. I would like to replace the mantelpiece, back panel and hearth but leave the gas fire and back in place. I would then replace with a cast iron insert and wooden mantelpiece with the same opening dimensions as the original fire. Is this possible or does the gas fire and back need to come out as well? This will determine what fireplace I can order and what job I need to post.

I think you may need to look at the manufactures instructions of what ever fire you are thinking of having as they all have deferent requirements.
