Lovely "clunking" noises

Posted by Jo Fairbairn, on
I have a Halstead Ace HE 30 boiler, and it keeps making a "clunking" noise and expelling water from the outside tap. Its louder than it has been previously, and on looking at the boiler, the pressure gauge is fluctuating between 2.5 and 3 bar every clunk! I have no clue what to do with it and whether it just needs air bleeding or what? Please help!! I dont want someone to come out if I'm just overreacting

It sounds like you do need a heating engineer as your expansion vessel is flat. Safety first, have a qualified person look at it.

The pipe outside that water is coming out of is the pressure releif valve this is a safety device that opens at 3 bar and it makes a clunking noise when it opens your problem sound as though your boiler filling loop has been left open causing water to fill the heating up to 3 bar or there is no expansion in the expansion vessel then when the water heats it expanding and pushing the pressure up to 3 bar. I would check to see if the filling loop is off first then get an engineer out to look at it. The 15mm pipe outside as I said is the PRV water should not normally come out of this if it does you need a new one installing by a Gas Safe Registered engineer hope this helps cheers Ray
