Flooring

I have an older home (1907) and I'm almost certain that there are hardwood floors throughout. The basement is unfinished, cinder block. I would like to expose and, ultimately refinish, the floors but the basement is very cold in the winter and I'm afraid that without carpet the rooms on the first floor will get cold and hard to heat. Do you have any suggestions for me?
