Improvements to loft for frequent access

Posted by Amy Buckingham, on
I want to improve the access to my loft so it's easier to use on a daily basis. Main things I want done are to widen the hatch, get a new drop down ladder (something that's almost like stairs to walk up and easy to pull down and put back), put electricity in and put more flooring in (the main area has flooring, but not all the way to the edges). Do I need several trades in? Who should I ask to do the hatch, stairs and flooring?

Hi. You need a decent carpenter to cut the loft hatch wider and fit the steps. Most of the slide up steps are more like a ladder than stairs. Depending on how much you have to spend and how often you're going to use the space, perhaps a small remodelling of the surrounding space would allow the fitting of 'paddle' steps, (google them) which allow a much steeper angle, and therefore require less space than a set of stairs. Often, because the space toward the edges are too low to enter, its better to build in cupboards to more effectively use the space. Any decent carpenter would be able to lay cable for a ring main, but an electrician would be needed, (by law) to connect the cables to the main fuse box. Hope this helps. Roy
