Tiling job

Posted by Mal Diamond, on
Would a tiler tile behind electrical sockets and switches ?and how much for laying 4 square metres of tiling in a kitchen this way?

Karl Hockless

Hi Mal. I'm assuming the area to be tiled is above the unit worktops. Yes the plug sockets can be loosened/removed and tiles cut to fit behind them. Socket fronts are then re-screwed and will probably need longer screws. Tiler will need electric isolating off to do this. The correct way to tile above worktops is to not tile directly onto the work surface, but instead to leave a 2mm gap (sit tiles on spacers) and at the end after grouting when everything is dry, to inject colour matched silicone into the gap. This will not crack or fall out if the woktop moves slightly over time whereas grout would. To do this job I would allow 2 days and expect to pay 2 x day rate + materials. Karl
