Floor tiles

Posted by Alexandra Docherty, on
I had my bathroom redone last year, floor tiles will placed on the floor boards. However less than one year on the tiles are becoming loose as grouting has come away. Can these be re-secured?

Alexandra, you can not put floor tiles straight onto floorboards or else they will crack and come loose. They have to be laid onto 12mm ply wood which has been screwed down at 6 inch intervals all over. Even better use a product like No More Ply which is a specialist product for this purpose. Tiles should also be primed first with SBR or similar (not PVA). It sounds like the floor will have to come up and be completely re-done I am afraid. Also, make fur none of the wall tiles are loose especially those above head height for the sake of safety. Karl
