What is the best surface to floor tile on?

Posted by Kevin Counihan, on
I am re-tiling the toilet floor. Is it ok to just tile on top of a new ply sheet? or is there better material than ply to use?

A good 9 mm thick plywood sheet should be fine to tile on to, tho if you prefer , you can use 9 mm thick tile backer board which can be purchased from any good tile shops, make sure the boards are securely screwed down to eliminate any bounce Phil

Hi ply is fine however you need to seal the ply first make sure it is screwed every 6" and use flexible grout and adhesives . Jason Edifice projects

Hi, just make sure the ply has no movement or the grout, even the tiles may crack. Screw down what is loose but be mindful of any electrical wire or pipes when screwing, to avoid the risk of any piercing use 1 1/2" screws. Hope this helps. Oh and use a flexible adhesive and grout : )
