Shrunken Double Glazing Seals

Posted by Charles McIvor, on
I have recently purchased a tenement flat in Edinburgh, on the home report it commented that the double glazing had shrunken seals. Can someone let me know if it is more cost efficient to replace the seals or replace the windows... Also what would an approximate cost be for each? Thanks in advance.

Hi Charles, the shrunken seals you are referring to i guess are on the inside of the house. people often think that these seals when they shrink effect the sealed unit and therefore let in moisture; its simply not the case. these seals depending on the age of the system can be replaced and can be sourced from double glazing repair companies. they are easy to replace once you can source them. you simply pull them out and replace with the new one cut to length. WARNING DON'T REMOVE ALL FOUR SIDES AT ONCE AS YOU WILL END UP LOOSING THE TOP GLAZING BEAD IN MOST CASES AND YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT BACK IN. Do one seal strip at a time and you will be fine. if in doubt get a glazier or window fitter to do it. it should not cost you more then £ 400.00 total to do the whole house if done by a fitter. London prices. you don't need new windows.
