How to find a local emergency electrician

Are your lights flickering or buzzing? Is there a lingering burnt smell in your home that won’t go away? These are all signs that your electrics are faulty and potentially dangerous. Ignoring electrical issues can cause electrical shocks or fires to break out. Hire an emergency electrician today to keep you and your home safe.

What can an emergency electrician help with?

Emergency electricians are specialised in electrical issues that require immediate, professional help. In both residential and commercial settings, emergency electricians are trained to handle a wide variety of electrical emergencies, including:

  1. Power outages
  2. Electrical fires or a burning smell coming from outlets
  3. Electrical surges causing damage to appliances and electrical systems
  4. Electrical shocks from appliances, outlets or faulty wiring (your electrician might carry out a PAT testing inspection to ensure your appliances are safe to use)
  5. Frequent tripped circuit breakers or broken fuse boxes
  6. Exposed or faulty wiring that can cause electrical shocks or fires

If your sockets are scorched, or if your fuses blow repeatedly and at random, these are both signs that your electrics might need updating. Read our 2023 rewiring cost guide for more signs that your electrics are a potential hazard, as well as costs to install new electrics. Or, speak to a rewiring specialist today to book a consultation.

Emergency electricians are also equipped to deal with storm or other weather-related damage, offering immediate solutions for electrical faults that could be dangerous. Have an issue with your electrics? Get the expertise of a local, electrical emergency specialist today.

What should I do whilst I wait for an emergency electrician?

If you suspect an electrical issue in your home, there are a few precautionary measures you can take to keep you and your home safe. To prevent further damage, you can do the following:

  1. Turn off the power supply at the main switchboard to reduce the risk of electrical shocks, fires, or other electrical hazards
  2. Unplug your electrical appliances to prevent them from getting damaged
  3. Avoid contact with water, staying away from wet areas until your emergency electrician arrives

If you notice any signs of electrical fires, sparks, or smoke, keep a safe distance from the affected area, and evacuate the building if necessary. Make sure you clearly communicate the problem with your electrician so they can prepare accordingly to resolve the problem.

Factors to consider before you hire an emergency electrician

To avoid your electrics becoming a hazard, you should get an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) done on your home every 10 years (or every 5 if you rent), and a full house rewire every 25 years. Find out more about keeping your electrics safe in our EICR blog.

However, if you are noticing signs that your electrics are faulty, then you’ll need to call an emergency electrician as soon as possible to avoid a fire or electric shock.

  1. Are an experienced company with a strong history of successful projects
  2. Have all the necessary licenses and insurance needed to protect you and their workers
  3. Have a good range of positive reviews from previous customers vouching for their reliability
  4. Are available to carry out the work in the timeframe you need it by
  5. Are quoting a price and payment option that you are happy with, having compared the quote with other local electrician companies

An emergency call electrician is more likely to respond quickly, as they’ll be right around the corner and ready to help.

What qualifications does my emergency electrician need?

Most repair jobs can be carried out by any electrician. However, if you need new electrics installed, then you’ll need to ensure that your electrician is Part P certified.

Part P is a recognised certificate that ensures your electrician has been approved to carry out electrical installations safely. They can self-certify that any electrical installations have been carried out according to the building regulations.

Hiring a fully qualified, licensed electrician offers many benefits:

  • It ensures compliance with safety standards that protect your home and loved ones
  • It provides legal protection in case of accidents or damages
  • It ensures quality work, reducing the risk of future issues

Speak to a local emergency electrician to get a fast response for your electrical problem.

How much does an emergency electrician cost to hire?

How much you’ll end up spending on your emergency electrician depends on a range of factors, including:

  1. When you need the electrician, with weekends, holiday periods, and non-working hour periods often costing more
  2. How complex and severe the electrical repair job is, with extensive electrical damage leading to higher service charges
  3. The cost of any parts and materials your electrician might need to fix your problem
  4. Where you live in the UK, with cost of labour rising in London and the South East

On average, you can expect to pay anywhere between £100 and £200 an hour for emergency electrical services, with additional charges for any parts and specialist equipment needed to complete the job.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report can cost anywhere from £100 to £350, whilst getting your house rewired will cost you anywhere from £3,000 to £12,000, depending on the size of your property.

For a more accurate quote for your specific project, speak to an emergency electrician in your local area.

It’s a good idea to ask your emergency electrician a few questions before you hire them:

Questions to ask an emergency electrician

  1. Do you have public liability insurance, and are you Part P certified?
  2. How many years of experience do you have?
  3. How long will the job take to complete?
  4. How much will the job cost?
  5. Do you use subcontractors? If so, are they licensed and insured?
