Hi Drew You are right to be concerned if you feel that the work has not progressed to a point which justifies a further payment. '50%' complete is always going to be a little ambiguous, but on the face of what you've outlined here I would agree it's not at that point. The quote or estimate you received should itemise the labour and materials separately. If you've not already paid him for all of the materials then a request for this I would say is reasonable. I would suggest with the labour that you should go back to him with what you deem to be 50% complete (based on the list above). I would think it reasonable for that to include resolving the things that you are concerned about and maybe getting to half way through the tiling (which also allows you to gauge the quality of his finishing work)? If yourself and the contractor can maintain the conversation on a calm and professional level that always helps. Both parties should be willing to compromise but you shouldn't be pressured into making a payment that you feel is unreasonable. And as a last resort, as much as it may be an inconvenience, you can always walk away and progress with someone else.
