How do I know if a wall is a weight bearing wall?

Posted by Donnah Blake, on
Looking to extend house and wondering if we can knock down an internal wall between kitchen and dining room. The wall does continue upstairs and divides two bedrooms.

Nobody could possibly know without looking at it but if you get a builder round they should be able to tell within a few minutes.

That sounds a lot like a weight bearing wall. If you knock down that wall you would need a steel (RSJ) to support the continued wall upstairs. Unless the wall is false then it would be fine

Hi Donnah Yes it’s definitely possible for it to be removed, with out seeing the make up of the wall and weather there any supports in the roof baring down on the upstairs walls it’s hard to say for sure wether it would need a steel support put in, but it does sound like it bares some weight, I would be happy to come and view it for you. Thanks Toby
