What to use on solid oak internal doors?

Posted by Michael Hull, on
I have new internal oak doors from Howdens, on the packing it says: "Do not use oils, waxes or dyes on this door." So my question is why is this, and what then are my options to protect the doors?

Hi Michael I have checked Howdens selection of oak doors. In their technical info section they specify Ready for finishing with lacquer, varnish or stain. This door is NOT suitable for waxes, polishes and/or oils as these products do not seal the door properly and may cause veneer delamination. This implies that the door may be veneered. I would recommend contacting Howdens customer help line to find out a little more about the exact product, provided the person you speak to is knowledgeable enough.. It may be a case that the oak/veneer may already have some treatment. In general, oak has high tannin contents, when water penetrates oak it reacts with tannin resulting in blackening, tannin dissolves in water, therefore dry wipe when dusting. Sun light makes oak turn silvery grey. Sunlight through windows shining on oak doors could change the natural look of oak in time. This is why UV protection is generally recommended, Osmo UV Protection Oil 420 is a recommended product. Hope this helps Raffi

Hello, the doors in question are a very thin veneer on usually a chipboard substrate but with good solid oak edgings. If you were to apply oils, waxes or dyes they will have a chemical reaction with the glue used to bond the veneers. These types of doors are best treated with water based varnishes and will need at least 2 coats, applied with a brush with a light rubbing down between coats.

Hi Michael, another option is to use shelac sanding sealer (only use a good quality natural hair brush to apply )advantages are that its quick drying the more coats you apply the glossier the finish gets and you can cut back between coats with fine wire wool and use wax on the wire wool to gently buff up the final coat to give a satin finsh which is more traditional for oak than gloss !Good luck Pete

I assume the doors are oak veneer. They are covering the risk of the veneer peeling due to chemical or oil. Ask howdens what to use, if they are solid ignor what they say and use osmo oil applied with a brush and buffed if with fine wire wool
