Masonry paint will waterproof wall/bricks. There's no need to add another layers but it won't do any damage if you will. You can try Murfill range, but prices are around £100 plus VAT for 15kg and that will be enough to cover approx. 12 sq mtr.

Yes ,you'll need to undercoat with a waterproofer first , and then another layer of masonry paint (Dulux Weathershield) , but keep in mind - buildings should not be sealed tanks, they should breathe ,waterproof coatings trap water. Regards Kosta Cloudpainters

There is no nead to water proof the masonry prior to painting and if anything this may even cause problems for painting. The paint will water proof the masonry so no need for extra work or money prior to painting. You have the choice of using a high quality water based masonry paint or oil based masonry paint like Johnstones Pliolite. Both should be guaranteed for 15yrs so long lasting finish. I sometimes use pliolite as I feel it keys to the stone better and reduces the risk of peeling in later years and it is shower proof in 20 minutes which is handy at this time of year. However the Pliolite will give a sheen finish so if a Matt is required best use water base. The masonry will require stabalising solution applied if powdery, soft, or highly absorbant. Stabalising solution will harden the soft stone. If not applied the paint will not stick and peel will probably be assured. Also do paint if temperature is below 5 degress as ice may form in the water or cracking may appear in the finish coat. Hope this helps All the best Gary

I think it really depends on the reason for the waterproofing. For example if the walls need repointing and the mortar has become porous then using a water proofer would just mask the underlying issue and wouldnt last very long anyway.

You could use a stabiliser solution before you paint the masonary, than when finished you can get a clear water repellant to go over the walls you have painted. hope that helps you. If you have a local Johnstones branch near you they can ring their technical branch to advise you. Tony.
