Good evening John, there are several different types of lime mortar. A lime cement mortar will simply consist of sand, hydrated lime and cement. Often mixed in a 5/1/1 ratio. This type of mortar is only suitable for structures built using cement. If the original structure has been built using a lime mortar it is imperative that no cement is used in the mix. In this instance you should use a hydraulic lime mix. This type of lime is harder to source but several builders yards do stock it and you can also buy online. For this type of mortar mix 2 parts sharp sand with 1 part silver sand and 1 part hydraulic lime. Depending on the strength you desire you can use either nhl2,nhl5 . 3.5 or nhl
