Hot water causing a power drain?

Posted by Jo king, on
I moved into a 2 bed flat a month ago and am alarmed by the power usage and electricity bills. I am so concerend I have been trackign the meter readings throughout the days. I think the culprit might be the hot water tanks. I set it on timer to come on 2x a day, but when the electricity usuage was becomign an issue I went to once a day. Then I set the timer to 'off' but hot water kept coming and the temperature was very hot. I videoed my tank so my dad coudl see and he thinks there are 2 tanks - one controlled by a timer, and one not. Both have wall switches. He said the one not controlled by the timer will always be on if the switch is on! It has been on since I arrived as I had no idea about this. I'd never come across this before. I can give a link to the video as I uploaded it.

Sorry to hear about you dilemma! Unfortunately if the HWC's are quite old you will need to renew. Instead of hot water storage, we would suggest installing a small combination boiler to your property to heat the hot water supplies and central heating, you would be looking for a 28kw boiler (and a radiator renewal if you wish to do so). These jobs come in around the same labour/material, so we would advise the latter. More economical to run, more energy efficient and less potential maintenance (if the right boiler is chosen) JIRELAND PLUMBER
