New Build Double Glazing

Posted by Rosheen Crane, on
Approached several companies to obtain quotes for new build double glazed windows in aluminium. All came back stating they could not supply the largest of the windows. One company said they could fulfill what we required. Delivery and installation would be started in 4 to 6 weeks. This was in mid February 2019. We confirmed via email that we wanted them to provide the windows. We paid 50% of the cost for the windows shortly after. After 6 weeks there was no sign of any windows so we contacted the company and were called to their office for a meeting. We were then told that none of the windows had been manufactured as there were issues with supplying the largest windows. Some of the windows are 2.5 metres high and originally they were supposed to be a tilt mechanism. We were advised that top hung the hinges would not be man enough and bottom hung we wouldn’t be able to reach the handle which would be at the top. We were told that we would have to have tilt and turn windows. We have asked why the handle on these could be central to the window and why this could not be the same for the original design, we have had no answer to this. We were unaware that the tilt and turn mechanism meant the window profile for these windows is horrendously wife, one of my specific requirements for the windows. Next to the window in a couple of places there is a single door and the handle on the door has been installed higher than on the window and has a completely different handle, this looks ugly and very out of symmetry. We would not have bothered with the doors had we known the windows open as doors. Upstairs we have two tilt and turn windows and by turning a key and raising the handle anyone can just walk out from the first floor windows. Exterior door frames in two areas needed to open inwards, these could not be supplied in aluminium as per our spec so we have had to compromise again and have had to settle for UPVC.. All bathroom windows were fitted with obscure glass when the spec said plain glass. This is in the process of being changed. It is now the end of July 2019 and some of the glazing still has not been fitted so apart from all the compromises we have had to make we are now battling to get the job completed. My main concern is the ugly tilt and turn windows which are also a major safety issue, what if anything can I do?
