Tradesmen can shore up homes to deal with gales

With the British weather forecast to take a turn for the worse from today, homeowners could be wise to hire a tradesman to shore up their property’s defences.

Insurance company Aviva, responding to predictions of 45 mph winds over the coming days, said there are a number of precautions that can be taken to protect a building.

Among the firm’s tips on what to do in the run-up to bad weather are to check for loose tiles on the roof and secure any vulnerable fences, posts or outdoor structures.

In addition to looking out for these features, the company warned trees can fall down, boundary walls have the potential to collapse and roof felt can be lifted – all of which a professional may be able to help with.

Direct Line recently revealed approximately 19.7 million people in the UK could be at risk of some damage to their homes over the winter.
