Rebuilding bath frame and possible tiling

Posted by Ceri Hughes, on
I have a double bath that sits in a wooden frame with 3 of the sides adjacent to the bathroom wall. There are tiles on top of frame, and also completely covering the side panel of the bath. There's a separate electric shower on one of the walls, and the constant dripping has rotted away some of the sealant, causing one sides of the frame to partially rot away. It's not affecting the structural integrity of the frame, so to prevent further damage, a makeshift plastic panel was put over the top of 2 of the bath sides (one for the shower, and one for the side with the taps). This was working OK, but looks ugly and the sealant has also rotted away on that too. I've removed the plastic panels and see that in addition to the original rot, there's another side that's started rotting away too. I haven't been able to look under the other 2 sides, but they're away from a constant water source, so I suspect that the wood there is intact. I would like the bath frame rebuilt and put back to how it used to be - i.e. with tiles on top of the frame and no plastic panels. This will require at the bare minimum, rebuilding part of the frame and retiling where necessary. In the worst case, the whole frame may need rebuilding - I have no idea of the state of the frame under the remaining 2 tiled areas. Can you advise how I should list this job (building? / tiling?) - I very much doubt that there'll be any plumbing required as the issue isn't with a leak. I'd also require any "top layer" of wood to be completely waterproof to prevent this happening again - I don't think the last builder took that into account. Thanks for your help in advance!
