P.S. I don't need a pen pusher in a shirt and tie to deem my work satisfactory. I'll take care of that myself.

Tom, people who are part of a governing body are obviously going to claim they are superior. You don't need to join a governing body to prove you are competent. I refuse to pay £600 a year for a shiny sticker on my van.

Lee, Your response doesn't make sense, NICEIC, Electsa members are required to work to a higher standard than your standard electrician or Bob down the pub, your assumption that the work is underwritten by a legal body which protects the customer, is somehow insignificant baffles me completely and your statement that members of these organisations are more likely to do a bad job than an electrician or some semi skilled person is ridiculous, if the qualifications required to be a member of these organisations wasn't important, then we wouldn't waste our time and money to get them, not to mention its a requirement of law for virtually all work done to be provided with the relevant safety certificates, which as im guessing you are unable to provide your customers Given the option of you saying thats fine.. Honest or me providing the legal and correct paperwork... I'll keep paying for the amendments courses and membership fees And as far as recommendation goes, yes its important, work by word of mouth, is great, but work done and guaranteed by the industries governing bodies is critical.... Perhaps if you ever get qualified and become a member, then you will understand just what it takes and the quality of work you need to maintain, because your work is checked annually Regards Tom

Tom, good workmanship is not guaranteed by joining a governing body. Your argument that the governing body underwrite work is insignificant. Just because a good may look ok, doesn't mean that it is. Cables and terminations are often hidden away out of sight. So don't be mislead. There is NO WAY at all to guarantee a high standard of work. Best way to get a good electrician is to use one that has been recommended. From experience, most of the sparks that are part of a governing body are poor, and use "but I'm in a governing body" as a cloak to hide behind. Regards.

Lee Governing bodies such as NICEIC underwrite the work of their members so that they are protected, in addition if the customer is not happy, they can take their complaint to them and they will assess the work undertaken by the Electrician, if the work is deemed unsatisfactory then they will have it redone and the Electrician has their membership revoked. References are important but protection is critical for the customer

Governing bodies cannot guarantee a good standard of work in no way, shape or form. Check references is the best way.

Hi Loz Most importantly, ensure your electrician is a member of NICEIC or similar recognised body and make sure you check online. Remember a full rewire is an intrusive project, you will need plasterers for when its finished Also remember that the cost of a rewire may sound high but it will last for a long time
