How to add colour to your kitchen in 2021

Light neutrals – including whites, creams and greys – have been the go-to colours in the last few years, especially in small kitchens. But according to our 2021 Home Improvement Trends Report, kitchen colour schemes are going to be bolder this year. This year, dark blue and black kitchen interiors with matte or metallic finishes will be popular, as well as crisp light blue and two tone colour combinations. Excited by this year’s hues but unsure on how to use them in your home? Read our advice below.

Create a luxurious space with dark blue

A dark blue, such as midnight blue or navy, is a smart and sophisticated colour choice. Even if you have a smaller kitchen, it works if you use it sparingly – on a single kitchen island for example – and balance it with lighter flooring and walls. You could paint the low level cabinets dark blue, but keep the wall-mounted cabinets a neutral tone. If you’re after a complete kitchen makeover and want to make a statement, consider painting the walls your dark blue colour of choice and installing contrasting fixtures in gold or silver.

Stay on trend with a stylish black kitchen

Fans of monochrome, are you tempted by the black kitchen trend? If you’re starting from scratch, opt for coordinating devices such as a sleek black toaster, range cooker or kettle. Black cabinetry looks sleek and dramatic – especially if you choose a super glossy jet black finish. If you’re worried about a black kitchen looking too harsh and gloomy, there are different shades of black that’ll work whether you want a modern or country style kitchen, including black olive, onyx and charcoal.

Freshen up your kitchen with light blue

Light blues add a calm and contemporary feel to a multipurpose kitchen. They feel fresh and alluring, like the sky and sea, and work well in high-end, rustic or coastal themed spaces. Blue tiles, either patterned or plain, are an easy way to introduce your favourite shade – you could re-tile the whole kitchen or simply add a tiled splashback in duck egg blue, powder blue or a brighter, lighter shade of turquoise.

Add a modern touch with two tones

A two tone kitchen looks smart and is a great way to introduce a hue that you like, without overpowering the space. You could have a pop of colour on your cabinets, walls or furniture, balanced with a muted or neutral tone everywhere else. Wood or marble worktops can also help to bring harmony to your chosen colour scheme. If you find colour challenging, read our advice on how to choose a colour scheme.
