Pull switch Bathroom ceiling light problem

Posted by Jon Westerby, on
Hi I've been trying to fix my mother in laws pull switch bathroom light. Fixed my own a couple of times with no issues but when I installed this one and switched the power back on it didn't work. Her switch was broken. I couldn't find a switch to match her socket so i installed a new socket and switch. Hers has 2 red wires, a green and yellow wire and 2 black wires that weren't connected to anything when opened the old socket. I followed the instructions I got with the new socket and switch and attacked one red wire to the comm screw terminal Pearl Pearl Wilson, Technician's Assistant Who makes your router? You Sorry I hit send accidentally before I'd explained the problem properly Pearl Pearl Wilson, Technician's Assistant What have you tried so far? You Its a Bencon pull switch bathroom ceiling light. The switch has screw in connectors inside with clamps. I've never seen those before and I think that must be what I did wrong. All I've seen beforw are screw connectors where the screw screws down onto the wire and holds it in place. These ones have metal plates that open up as you turn the screw then tighten when you screw the other way. I installed a new socket and switch. There are 2 red wires and one yellow and green wire in the ceiling. There are also 2 black wires but they were not connected to the old socket. I followed the instructions I got with the new socket and switch. 1 red wire to L2, 1 red wire to comm (common), the green and yellow wire to Earth. The problem was that the screw in plate connectors were not all the same. The L2 and comm connectors had bronze coloured bottom plates and silver coloured top plates. The earth connector has a different connector. It appears to have 2 silver plates but they don't separate whe the screw is turned. Both plates move up and down together and don't come apart. What I don't understand is where the wire is meant to go on the earth terminal. It can't go between the silver plates as they don't separate. Does it go above the plates or below them ? Does the wire need to be touching the silver plate or the screw inside ? I assume that with the other terminals the naked wire is meant to go between the 2 plates ? That it does not need to be touching the screw ? Its the screw connector in the Earth terminal that really has ever confused. I don't understand why its completely different from the other 2 connectors or why it has 2 plates that do not separate. Hope you can help me !

Wet Socket

So I have a 3 way Grid plate with 3 switches, reading from left to right, Cooker Hood, Dish Water & Washing Machine. This is located approx 10 inches to the left of my kitchen sink. I accidentally ended up splashing and soaking everything. I immediately turned off the Cooker Hood and Washing Machine, The dishwasher switch was already off. I tried to mop up all the water and dry the switches. A few hours later, I turned on the Cooker Hood which worked fine, however when turning the Washing Machine it started buzzing and went bang and tripped all the kitchen appliances. Soot like stuff come out from behind the grid plate and deposited itself on the finger switch and there is traces of soot on the tiles below the switch. I turned off all electric and took the cover plate off. I could not see any dampness so refitted the grid plate and turned the electric on with the switches in the off position. 4 hours on I again tested the 2 appliance appliances we have fitted. The Dishwasher is redundant as we don't have one and there are fitted cupboards in front of the plug point so there is no access to that point. Again the Cooker Hood worked but again the Washing Machine started buzzing and went bang, Once again tripping all kitchen appliances and depositing more soot like stuff. I turned the switch to off and then turned the trip switch back on as we have fridge and freezer etc in the kitchen too that we need to run. So 2 questions. Is it safe to have electric on but leave that switch off and what can I do to fix and resolve this problem please. We are clinically extremely vulnerable and therefore would like to fix this issue without having to call a tradesman in.
